Just Do It Friday: The Chimp Paradox

The other day when commuting to work I was listening to the Chris Evans Breakfast Show. Everyday they have a mystery guest and Chris interviews him or her. And that day the guess was Dr. Steve Peters.

Dr. Steve Peters is a Consultant Psychiatrist and works, among others, with the British Cycling team. Yes, those who did great during the last Olympic Games! He is also the mind behind the book The Chimp Paradox.

I didn´t hear about him or this Paradox until that day this week, but as soon as I came home I bought his book and started reading it immediately. To summarise, the idea is that there is a part on our brains that behaves like a chimp. There is also the human brain, which is the logical one.

When we don´t control that chimp we can get to wrong conclusions, react in unexpected ways, over eat, don´t exercise... Basically the chimp behaves like a chimp, and if the chimp doesn´t feel like doing something, it won´t do it. Whereas the logical part should be there to control that chimp and tell it when to do that something.

I will give you a personal example. Last week I saw two of my colleagues whispering to each other and when I approached them they stopped. Before knowing anything about this Paradox, the first conclusion I reached was: the are criticising me, they don´t like me, I am doing something wrong. And that bad feeling stayed with me for the whole day.

After reading about the chimp I see it from a different angle: my colleagues were whispering so it could have been they were discussing their own problems and didn´t want me to hear it (fair enough!). Other option can be that the conversation just stopped there and they were not going to continue talking even if I wasn´t there. Much better, don´t you think?

Mucho mejor no?

Since I found out about this I am trying to change that, and instead of thinking: they are thinking this or that about me I think: this is the chimp in control, calm her, reassure her and keep going on with your life.

In the beginning this will be very difficult to control, as we are use to let the chimp take over all the time (some more than others). But if we pay attention, every time we notice the chimp taking over, we can use our human mind to control it.

I guess this is all practice, like a sport. But I am sure that this can change our lives if we learn how to master it. This will give us a power we didn´t know we had, and that is great news!

What do you think about The Chimp Paradox? Have you heard about it? Have you tried to follow it?

Qué opináis sobre La Paradoja del Chimpancé? Habíais oído hablar de ella? Habéis intentado seguirla?

As always, thank you for reading!

Como siempre, muchas gracias por leerme!
