5 Family Friendly Activities to Do in Glasgow

Glasgow has been for a very long time the forgotten city in Scotland. Edinburgh and Stirling both have castles and an old atmosphere that Glasgow can´t compete with. But I think sometimes even Scottish people tend to forget what a great amount of things there are to do in Glasgow.

The museums are great, and free (most of them). Which is great for those weekends when it rains (most of them) and you don´t know what to do. I want to dedicate today´s post to those with families, as I think sometimes it is difficult to find things to do when you have the little ones and the weather doesn´t behave.

But these five things can also be done even if you don´t have any kids, as there is plenty to see and do. I hope you enjoy it!

1. Riverside Museum

Glasgow´s Riverside Museum was design by famous architect Zaha Hadid, and it is a very impressive building by the river Clyde. It took over the old Museum of Transport and they have thousands of objects on display. It is also possible to get inside some of them, like an old tram carriage!

Last year the Museum won the European Museum of the Year Award, concede to new museums or those that undertook a big refurbishment.

2. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

Kelvingrove is one of the most eclectic museums I have ever visited, if not the most. It has from paintings to stuffed animals, from haggis to chairs designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. There is plenty to see, and you can spend a good two hours looking around.

The Museums has a dedicated area for small kids, with plenty of things for them to see and do (here). Also every Saturday and Sunday they organise events for children and families, on a drop in basis, see here for more information. Whereas the Centre for New Enlightenment has been design for your people to discover their potential.

3. Scottish Football Museum

As you may already know, football is quite big in Scotland. In the Scottish Football Museum you can discover more about this sport and also see the world two oldest football trophies. The Museum has on display a wide range of objects, all football related.

The guides, all super friendly and passionate about football, will tell you everything there is to know, and they are more than happy to answer all your questions. If you are lucky they may let you take a penalty so you can check the speed of the ball!

4. Glasgow Science Centre

The perfect place to learn more about nearly anything and for kids to touch and experience new things. The Science Centre is three floors high, and there are interactive exhibitions in all of them.

Apart from this, the complex counts with an Imax cinema, the biggest in Scotland, and a planetarium. The Glasgow Tower, which is also in the complex, is 127 metres high and it is the only fully rotating building in the world. This allows you to have a panoramic view of the city.

5. Number 1 Chocolate Factory

Well, who doesn´t like chocolate? Number 1 Chocolate Factory is a great place in Glasgow to spend time with the kids doing something that they (and you) will love. Kids can make their own chocolate bars or decorate chocolate moulds.

They run workshops for children every weekday and also on the weekends. This is a drop in class, so no need to book! Here you can also find a cafe and a chocolate shop, in case you don´t know what to do will the little ones have a great time.

(Sorry, no photos of this one).

(Lo siento, de esto no tengo fotos).
